My career has moved through professional quantity surveying, international project consulting, property development, sustainable construction experiments, business setbacks and the practical adoption of AI. That range is useful because real founder decisions rarely fit neatly inside one discipline.

From project controls to founder decisions

Quantity surveying taught me to think in scope, cost, change, responsibility and evidence. International consulting added different commercial cultures and larger project environments. Running smaller businesses added the realities of cash flow, sales, hiring, disputes and personal accountability.

Building after setbacks

Experience is not only the successful jobs. Difficult projects, litigation, business failure and bankruptcy changed how I think about contracts, concentration risk and contingency. My current approach is deliberately more resilient: more documentation, clearer roles, more than one commercial option and faster recognition when a plan needs to change.

Research and innovation

A 2023 draft literature review commissioned within a University of Newcastle hempcrete research project framed the next stage around quantitative data, analysis and discussion rather than marketing claims. That distinction matters. Innovative materials become credible when the industry can move from enthusiasm to repeatable evidence: defined mixes, known installation methods, measured thermal and moisture behaviour, structural boundaries, documented compliance pathways and honest statements about what is still unknown.
